Komal Swaminathan is a multi-faceted personality, congress Activist in his early years, noted Tamil Theatre personality, Film Director, and a journalist.
He formed a theatre group called ‘STAGE FRIENDS’ in 1971 and has penned and staged nearly 30 plays. Many of his plays deal with larger issues of society and common man’s struggle for his basic needs. One such is Thanneer Thanneer, which was acknowledged as one of the most significant plays of the last century.
Komal’s daughter Lalitha Dharini Komal, a Software Professional for nearly two decades, revived her father’s theatre group STAGE FRIENDS in 2012 to give tribute to her father by staging some of Komal’s classics. Thanneer Thanneer was restaged in March of this year and was very well appreciated by all theatre lovers in Chennai and by students at large in Coimbatore and Thiruppur. She also restaged Komal’s comedy play ‘Iruttiula Thedatheenga.’ (Don’t Search in Dark). And then the crispy Theatre – eight short plays in fur different languages gained lot of momentum among theatre lovers.
Having tasted the success with these ventures and with that encouragement, Dharini has now formed a new theatre group “KOMAL THEATRE” with the existing team members along with some like-minded theatre people to venture out new ideas.
In the words of Dharini Komal – the founder of Komal Theatre…
“My father Komal was a professional dramatist in its pure sense, that theatre was his livelihood and there was no other source of income as he has not worked anywhere else in his life. The family of five of us, my mother, self and my two brothers were fed and all the three of us pursued education only from the income derived out of stage plays. It is amazing to think back my father’s strong passion in theatre, undiluted mission and his will power to keep the family happy amidst difficult days. He is our inspiration and now all his children are successful in their career. I wanted to give a tribute to my father by staging his plays and new plays and contribute back to Stage through which we are grown”.
This is just not a remembrance or dedication to Komal Swaminathan. It will work towards bringing literature to stage, and work towards good Theatre.
